Win Hill Sunset Walk

A Steep Climb, Stunning Views & Springy Surprises

I decided to head out to Win Hill one evening a week or two ago in search of the perfect sunset.

I’d tackled Win Hill before, but that walk was spoiled by poor visibility. I’d heard whispers about how sunsets from the summit were unreal… so I thought, f*ck it, let’s give it a go.

📍 Parking & Start Point

I drove the hour from home and parked just opposite the Hope HPBC car park
(Hope, Hope Valley, S33 6SB).
As it was after 6 PM, parking was free. Normally I use the main car park when walking this area.

For once – and possibly a first since starting the blog – I was prepared: I fired up my Garmin Solar 2, loaded the route, and set off.

🥵 The Climb

I followed a route that took me past Twitchill Farm, which during the day has an honesty shop and even a private indoor pool for hire (£25/hr – not bad if there’s a group of you).
Check it out here

The climb is short but steep – a proper leg burner – but the views make every step worth it.

🌄 The Top – Hope on One Side, Ladybower on the Other

Once at the top… wow.
To one side, you get sweeping views over Hope.
To the other, Ladybower Reservoir glistening in the distance.

Unfortunately, some dramatic clouds blocked the actual sunset, but honestly? The scenery still delivered.

🌙 The Descent – Slightly Dodgy, Slightly Fun

Heading down in the fading light was actually pretty easy.
I tried to take a shortcut, hit a dead end, but hey – what’s a walk without a little chaos?

The route eventually crossed Hope train station, with a bridge that was so springy I thought I might fall through. Definitely added a bit of drama.

From there, it was road walking in the dark. Nothing too wild.

📏 Stats & Final Thoughts

  • 🕒 Time: 2 hours 23 minutes
  • 📍 Distance: 5.14 miles
  • 🔥 Difficulty: 7.5/10 on the way up
  • 👣 Descent: 2/10 – mostly chill

If you’re doing this during the day, I’d reverse the route and finish at Twitchill with a swim.
If you’re doing it at sunset, bring a headtorch and a sense of humour.
